Since the independence referendum in 2014, the dates that the Scottish Government has formally requested a Section 30 order to allow them the power to hold an independence referendum on the subject of Scotland becoming an independent country.

Response

On 31 March 2017, the First Minister wrote to the then Prime Minister, Theresa May, to begin discussions to enable a referendum. A copy of this letter can be found at - https://www.gov.scot/news/section-30-letter/. On 19 December 2019, the Scottish Government published “Scotland’s Right to Choose” which called on the UK government to enter discussions to agree legislation with the Scottish Government that would put beyond doubt the Scottish Parliament’s right to legislate for a referendum on independence.
