Scottish prison arrivals and transitions data: FOI release
Information requested
Data relating to Scottish prison arrivals and transitions, with arrivals and transitions reported separately, covering the period 2013/14 to the latest available financial year.
Please provide the number of people recorded as:
1. Arrivals to the sentenced prison population; and
2. Transitions within/to the sentenced prison population,
for each financial year, broken down by:
1. Age group
Please provide the breakdown using the age categories available in your data. If possible, please provide:
- Under 18 - 18–20 - 21–24 - 25–29 - 30–39 - 40–49 - 50–59 - 60-65 - 65-69 - 70-74 - 75-79 - 80+
2. Sentence length
Please provide the following categories:
- Under 10 years - 10 years to under 12 years - 12 years to under 14 years - 15 years and over
Please provide the information in a machine-readable format where possible (for example, CSV or Excel).
I would also be grateful if you could provide clarification of the definitions and methodology used, specifically: - The definition of “arrival” used in the dataset. - The definition of “transition” used in the dataset. - Whether sentence length refers to the index sentence length, overall sentence length, or another measure. - Whether the figures relate to sentenced prisoners only, or whether any remand population is included.
Response
I enclose a copy of most of the information you requested in the format you asked for. The bespoke age categories for young prisoners you requested would have created a potential for disclosure when compared with other releases, so these have been altered to use standard categories.
