Information requested

You asked for information regarding who authored the updated version of the Scottish Good Practice Statement on ME/CFS, and who gave clinical input and oversight.

Response

The answer to your question is that the update – e.g. the identification and insertion of key recommendations from NICE Guideline NG:206 - was led by a clinician working within Scottish Government in 2022, who was based within a team headed by the National Clinical Director.

The recommendations were added via coloured and clearly demarcated textboxes, separate to the original 2010 narrative. The clinician was assisted by officials from the Clinical Priorities Unit who, as part of the update process, made a number of further administrative and non-clinical amendments including the following:

Updated and footnoted expired and broken weblinks, references and telephone numbers Added footnotes indicating where specific publications or legislation cited in the original text had been superseded, updated or withdrawn Added a footnote stating that SIGN guidelines continue to have primacy in Scotland, where available Augmented the statement on page 3 to indicate that the updated recommendations supersede the existing text where relevant, and further work would be undertaken to more comprehensively review the guidance Added footnotes referring the reader to the updated guidance within sections 4.5 and 4.6 Added update box on welfare rights / Social Security Scotland at section 7.1 Added update box on social care / National Care Service at section 7.2 Converted the references in Annex 8 into a bibliography Converted the document’s endnotes to footnotes.

As indicated within the document, Action for ME and partners authored an updated Appendix 1, comprising further resources and sources of support with updated contacts and documents.

An exemption under section s.38(1) of FOISA applies to the information you have requested as we consider the name of the clinician, no longer working with the Scottish Government, to be personal information, and is not considered to be within the public interest.
