Please provide the salary grade and salary scale for the Scottish Government inspectors of cremations and funerals.

Response

I have now completed my review of our response to your request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) for:

‘Please provide the salary grade and salary scale for the Scottish Government inspectors of cremations and funerals.’

I have concluded that a different decision should be substituted.

I have looked into this further and can confirm that there is no salary grade or salary scale for the Inspector of Burial, Cremation and Funeral Directors and therefore the Scottish Government does not have this information. This is a formal notice under section 17(1) of FOISA that the Scottish Government does not have the information you have requested.

There is currently one Senior Inspector of Burial, Cremation and Funeral Directors in post and they are paid a fixed rate. Scottish Ministers are expected to appoint some additional Inspectors of Burial, Cremation and Funeral Directors this year so further information on their payment rates will be provided when those posts are advertised. However, like the Senior Inspector, future inspectors will not be civil servants, and their pay will not be linked to any Scottish Government or other organisation’s grade or salary scale. This is different from the Chief Inspector of Education example you highlighted in your review request.

I hope this response helps clarify the response to your query. If you are unhappy with the outcome of this review you have the right to appeal to the Scottish Information Commissioner about our decision within six months of receiving this letter. Information on how to make an appeal, along with an application form, is available on the Commissioner’s website at: https://www.itspublicknowledge.info/YourRights/Unhappywiththeresponse/appealingtoCommissioner.aspx.
