An explanation of why the cleared up percentage you calculated is lower than the percentage of total crimes cleared up in the published tables.

Response

The answer to your question is, this is because it was not possible to obtain clear up rate information for the Coronavirus restrictions group, due to the separate and bespoke data collection used by Police Scotland. Therefore the denominator used to calculate the Percentage of total crimes cleared up is not total crimes (299,452 in 2020-21) but total crime excluding the Coronavirus restrictions crimes (278,476 in 2020-21). We have now added a footnote to Table 3 of Recorded Crime in Scotland, 2024- 25 to clarify this.
