Information requested

1. A refresh to current data of a spreadsheet entitled “Temporary Workers 2012-2019”, which summarised numbers of Fixed Term Appointments (FTAs) and Temporary Agency Workers from 2012 to 2019.

2. The number of temporary workers supplied by each agency, broken down by year from 2012 to 2019.

Response

Data covering request 1 are contained in the spreadsheet attached (Table 1 – “Temporary Agency Worker Numbers”).

Please note that total numbers provided in this table are snapshot figures, taken as at 31 March in each year. These provide an indicative level of temporary staffing and allow comparison with published headcount figures, as requested. Headcount figures for permanent and Fixed Term Appointees are taken from the Office for National Statistics publication “Public Sector Employment”.

A current list of temporary worker agencies is already available to you at https://www.gov.scot/publications/frameworks-and-contracts/

Data covering request 2 are contained in the spreadsheet attached (table 2 – “Total Assignments by Supplier”). Assignments are counted in the financial year in which they began only, e.g. an assignment which runs from 01 March 2012 to 31 April 2013 would be included in the figures for 2011-12. The numbers given are for total assignments throughout the year. These figures may include multiple short assignments for a single individual and will not correspond to the figures given in response to request 1 (which are snapshot headcount figures as at 31 March).
