Number of state-funded secondary schools that offer specialist music, dance, sport and Gaelic Medium Education: FOI release
Information requested
Please could you provide me with the number of state-funded secondary schools in Scotland that:
1) offer specialist music, dance or sports education.
2) are Gaelic medium.
From other sources (Scottish Government and others) I have the numbers of 6 specialist schools and 33 Gaelic medium secondary schools, but this information may not be correct / up to date.
Response
1) Scotland currently has six national Centres of Excellence (to reduce to 5 when Glasgow School of Sport closes in 2029), which are based in local authority schools across Scotland provide expert tuition in the areas set out below:
Subject Centre Name Host School Local Authority Music Douglas Academy Music School Douglas Academy East Dunbartonshire Aberdeen City Music School Dyce Academy Aberdeen Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd (National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music) Plockton High School Highland City of Edinburgh Music School Broughton Academy City of Edinburgh Sport Glasgow School of Sport (see note below) Bellahouston Academy Glasgow Dance The Dance School of Scotland Knightswood Academy Glasgow
The Centres of Excellence take children from across Scotland, after a rigorous audition process. They form a national network of specialist schools across Scotland which are of significant cultural importance in supporting and developing young people’s talents. Since the Concordat agreement with the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities in 2007 the Scottish Government no longer gives direct grant funding to local authorities for the Centres of Excellence schools. In 2008/09, the funding previously allocated to local authorities was rolled up into their overall block grant funding from the Scottish Government. This recognised that local authorities were best placed to consider their own needs and priorities. Earlier this year, Glasgow City Council took a decision that Glasgow School of Sport will close in 2029.
