Categorisation of railway stations in Scotland: FOI release
Information requested
I am writing to request information on the categorisation of railway stations in Scotland. In particular, I would like the following details:
How railways stations in Scotland are categorised (e.g. Category 1–5);
How each category is defined; and
Which stations fall into each category.
Response
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Transport Scotland does not have the information you have requested. The reasons why we do not have the information are explained below.
By way of background, all categories changed in 2017 due to a new version of The National Railways Security Programme (NRSP) being produced. This resulted in Scottish stations being categorised using the same methodology as those in England and Wales.
The details of station categories is held by The Land Transport Security (LTS) team in the Department for Transport (DfT). This is not information that Transport Scotland holds therefore, I suggest that you contact DfT directly as they may be able to provide a copy.
