Information requested

1. The country, or countries, where Scotland's existing rail rolling stock was built?

2. How much the ScottishGovernment has previously spent on purchasing electric rail rolling stock?

Response

I can confirm that Scotland's existing rolling stock was built in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Spain.

In terms of expenditure on rolling stock, the Scottish Government does not purchase rolling stock. The leasing of rolling stock is funded through the franchisee subsidy. Franchisees procure the rolling stock and the rolling stock is owned by financiers.

As an exception to the principle the Scottish Government part funded an element of the capital value associated with the Caledonian Sleeper fleet, which is electrically hauled for the majority of its journeys.
