Numbers and countries of documents served abroad: FOI release

You asked for information on "how many documents have been served from the year 2010 to date and what countries request for documents to be served?"
Response
The central authority carries out service to countries under the Hague Convention of 15 November 1965 on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters.
Attached to this letter is a table (Annex 1) listing the countries from which service requests to the Scottish central authority have come (shown as IN on the table - these are for service in Scotland) and to which countries requests for service from Scotland have been transmitted by the Scottish central authority (shown as OUT on the table). This is set out in years since 2010 to date with the number of requests for each country and a total figure for each year.
Within the EU, service of judicial and extra-judicial documents comes under Regulation (EC) No 1393/2007 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 November 2007 on the service in the Member States of judicial and extrajudicial documents in civil or commercial matters (service of documents). In Scotland, service under the EU regulation is carried out by sheriff officers and messengers-at-arms.
