Information requested

You asked for an indication of the number of overseas students now studying at Scottish universities, particularly in Glasgow, compared with numbers of Scottish students at present along with the trend and effect of this ratio over the past 10 years.

Response

The numbers of students from Scotland, the rest of the UK and overseas at both Glasgow and Scottish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) over the last 10 years is shown in the table below.

Universities receive over £1 billion of Scottish Government funding for eligible Scottish and EU students, via the Scottish Funding Council, which includes provision for a number of funded places, which in 2019-20 equated to over 128,200. International students and those from other parts of the UK (rUK) are not eligible to access the funded places which have been protected for eligible Scots-domiciled and EU students. Universities then decide how many non-funded places they will make available to fee-paying students over and above the funded places for Scottish and EU students.
