Information requested

You asked for the following information:

1. What is the total cost of the Scottish Government buildings’ maintenance backlog? 2. Please could you split the answer to (1) up by building. 3. Across the last 10 years how much has the Scottish Government spent on maintenance of buildings it owns or uses? 4. How many Scottish Government buildings are known to currently contain asbestos? 5. Across the last 10 years how many Scottish Government buildings have had asbestos removed? 6. What is the total cost of the work outlined in (5)?

Response

1. The total maintenance backlog cost associated with Scottish Government buildings currently stands at £6,935,340. This figure reflects overdue life cycle and maintenance forecast costs and does not include design fees or professional services related to implementation, which would be determined following a formal tender process.

A comprehensive Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme is in place to proactively manage building assets. This programme incorporates both time-based and usage-based scheduling, supported by routine inspections and servicing to identify and mitigate potential issues before they escalate.

In addition, any minor reactive maintenance requirements are addressed promptly by the contracted maintenance provider, in accordance with the terms of their service agreement.

3. Over the past 10 years, the Scottish Government has spent a total of £22,861,882.04 on the maintenance of buildings it owns or occupies.

4. Asbestos is currently known to be present in 37 Scottish Government buildings.

5. Records of asbestos removal are only available from October 2021 onwards. Since that time, asbestos removal has been carried out in 7 Scottish Government properties.

6. The total cost of asbestos removal work carried out since October 2021 is £30,412.03.
