Information requested

1. The number of probationary teachers in each academic year for as many years as records allow (ideally the last 10–15 years). 2. For each of those academic years, the number and/or percentage of probationary teachers who secured employment following completion of their probationary year, broken down by:

Permanent positions Fixed-term contracts Supply teaching roles

3. The number (or percentage) of teachers who leave the profession / are no longer teaching in Scotland within five years of completing their probationary year, again for each available cohort.

Response

Information on the number of probationary teachers and proportion of those that secured employment after probationary year is published in table 1.6 of the teacher census supplementary statistics. No information is collected on those that enter supply teaching roles.

Information on the proportion of teachers still in teaching employment in the years following their probation is published in table 1.7 of the teacher census supplementary statistics.
