Ending the Sale of Peat in Scotland: EIR release
Information requested
Your request concerned the Scottish Government’s consultation document ‘Ending the Sale of Peat in Scotland’, and the reference therein to ‘around 1,000 hectares of Scotland’s peatlands being used to produce peat for horticulture.’ Specifically, you have asked to be provided with the following information: the locations/address of the peat extraction sites that make up this 1,000 hectares; each site's size; and peat extraction requires planning permission, so details for each site.
Response
I attach a copy of the information you have requested. I should point out the information held was gathered via an information request from the former Chief Planner to Planning Authorities issued in November 2019. The aim of the information request was to gain a better understanding of commercial peat extraction sites in Scotland. However, few planning authorities were unable responded to the request at the time and you will appreciate that the information gathered represents a snapshot in time. Where the planning reference is noted as ‘not provided’ this is because no reference was provided to the Scottish Government by the relevant planning authority, and therefore this information is not held.
