Average speed on A9 within the vicinity of Dunbeath at specific time: FOI release

Thank you for your correspondence of 09 June 2026, requesting a copy of speed or traffic surveys carried out on the A9, at or in the vicinity of Dunbeath.
Response
Transport Scotland undertook a search and did not have any recorded speed surveys in the vicinity of Dunbeath.
However, The Scottish Safety Camera Programme makes use of connected vehicle data, which enables the monitoring of vehicle speeds at specific times and locations without the need for roadside equipment or third-party reporting delays. A review of traffic speed in the vicinity of Dunbeath (between Houstry Junction to the north and south of castle hill to the south) was undertaken from 9 June 2025 to 8 June 2026. This showed an average speed of between 42mph to 53mph and an 85th percentile speed (85% of vehicles are travelling at this or below) of between 50mph to 63mph, in relation to a national speed limit.
