Information requested

Please provide all research that Transport Scotland has conducted into Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil as a substitute for diesel since 2021.

Response

We have reviewed your request and found one piece of research that is, in part, relevant.

Transport Scotland commissioned a report looking at the economic opportunities for Scotland in low carbon fuels generally (which does include HVO) and had a study carried out by Climate Exchange on behalf of Transport Scotland and is publicly available here: Low-carbon transport fuels – an evidence review.

The report did touch on HVO but generally concluded that as the demand for LCFs in Road Transport was likely to reduce with increased electrification up to 2045 and that, due to finite feedstocks, their use would be prioritised in aviation and maritime.

It also said that, long term, the key opportunity for Scotland was in Hydrogen derived fuels for aviation and maritime.

This was the only relevant research commissioned by Transport Scotland that was identified.
