Information requested
1. How many road accidents were in Scotland over all, over the past 5 years?
2. How many road accidents were in Scotland on a national Speed limit road, over the past 5 years?
3. How many road accidents were in Scotland on a national Speed limit road, involves HGV over 7.5 tonnes, over the past 5 years?
4. How many accidents did Police Scotland say Speed was a contributing factor on National Speed limits in these accidents whether involving HGV or other vehicles?
Response
The records we hold relate to collisions where someone is injured or killed, and which become known to Police Scotland. The following tables provide information based on what is collected.
The speed limits provided in the tables below relate to the general speed limit applicable to the road on which the collision occurred, not to that governing a specified class of vehicle.
For the purpose of the final table, we have taken ‘accidents where Police Scotland say speed was contributory factor’ to mean collisions where a police officer attended the collision and 'driver or rider exceeding speed limit' was recorded as a factor contributing to the collision. There are potentially other ways that we could have defined this, for example including collisions where a driver was recorded as driving ‘too fast for conditions’ or a driver was recorded as being ‘careless, reckless or in a hurry’.
